Elderly absconder arrested in Australia
An 89-year-old man who fled New Zealand while facing sex charges dating back 52 years has been arrested in Australia and will be back in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow.
Interim name suppression was granted to the man by Judge Brian Callaghan when the case was called for a remand appearance today, after the man was charged with indecencies with a girl aged under 12 and rape of the same girl, and made a court appearance last month.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Paul Simcox said the man had left the country while on bail but he had been arrested and was being held in custody pending his return to New Zealand tomorrow.
He had been arrested on a breach of bail charge.
Judge Callaghan issued a warrant to arrest because of his non-appearance at court, even though he was already in police custody.
The offending is alleged to have occurred in the South Island, but the man has been living in Australia for many years before returning to New Zealand early this year.
