Court House-Sept-2013-05Police did not oppose bail for a 39-year-old man charged with the arson of an abandoned Worcester Street property used by squatters, when he made a brief appearance in the Christchurch District Court today.

Steven Christopher James Rolton, of St Albans, was granted bail by Judge Brian Callaghan and remanded to appear in court again on January 12.

He entered no plea to the charge of damaging the Worcester Street property by fire in the early hours of Monday morning.

The abandoned two-storey house was badly damaged by fire. Several squatters were believed to be living in the building at the time, but everyone escaped without injury.
