A 27-year-old woman has been refused bail after becoming the fourth person arrested for an alleged scheme in which elderly victims were scammed.

Leana Korau, also known as Wylie, of Wainoni, entered no pleas when she appeared in the Christchurch District Court on five charges of taking and dishonestly using bank cards.

Duty lawyer Grant Tyrrell applied for Korau’s release on bail, but Judge Jane Farish refused and remanded Korau in custody to March 10.

She said Korau’s release on electronically monitored bail could be considered later.

The police have alleged a group was contacting elderly people about “problems” with their bank cards and then exchanging them for what were pressie gift cards.

Korau was arrested at the weekend and was remanded in custody for today’s appearance.oAft
