Prison broomstick assault admitted
A 23-year-old prisoner has admitted a serious broomstick assault on another inmate in the Christchurch Men’s Prison in January.
Jamie Bryce Brown’s charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was changed to wounding with intent to injure in the Christchurch District Court, before he gave his guilty plea.
Brown was in prison on assault charges and contravening protection orders, when he attacked Michael Scott Holdem, who was admitted to Christchurch Hospital.
Judge Stephen O’Driscoll remanded Brown in custody for sentence on April 27.
He read him the first of the three strike warnings for repeat violent offenders, and asked for a pre-sentence report and a report for Brown’s suitability for a home detention sentence. Brown should be assessed for a restorative justice meeting with his victims, he said.
