Bike thief cops the wrong judge
A 26-year-old man was unlucky that a no-nonsense visiting judge in the Christchurch District Court knew him well from the court in New Plymouth.
Judge Allan Roberts said he had jailed Knicky Ian Richard Graham “with regular monotony”. He said he was not going to grant him bail on the three charges he was facing, but would give him a prison sentence if he agreed to it.
Probation also opposed bail on a charge that they were getting ready to lay for breaching their orders.
Graham had pleaded guilty to stealing a bicycle in Christchurch, a theft, and possession of a knife.
He cut through the lock of the bicycle in a bike stand, and rode off on it. The 50-year-old owner said he was gobsmacked when he found it gone, and was left wondering if it was stolen for drugs, or because the person who took it was on the streets.
Judge Roberts said it was probably both reasons, as he jailed Graham for three months.
