A judge has reserved his decision on a Civil Aviation Authority prosecution of a Kaiapoi man charged with flying a drone at a fire-fighting scene at Pines Beach in January 2015.
Judge Gary MacAskill reserved his decision after spending three days hearing evidence and submissions in the Christchurch District Court trial, and has scheduled the decision for May 6.
Simon Roy Reeve, 38, was charged with flying the camera-equipped drone without civil aviation authorisation on two days when stands of trees had caught fire at the beach north of Christchurch.
He was also charged with unnecessary endangerment for flying the drone while a helicopter fighting the fire was operating in the area.
Reeve denied all three charges. He has been remanded at large – without bail being required – for the reserved decision session.
Chris Macklin appeared as prosecutor for the Civil Aviation Authority and Rupert Glover as defence counsel for Reeve.
