People in the public gallery of the Christchurch District Court erupted when the man accused of the murder of Renee Larissa Duckmanton appeared in the dock.
Yelling obscenities and trying to approach him, they were restrained and the court was cleared.
The 31-year-old Ilam man has been charged with the murder of the sex worker on May 14.
He made a brief appearance and was granted name suppression by Judge Gary MacAskill.
He was remanded in custody without plea to the High Court in Christchurch on June 10.
Twenty-two year old Duckmanton was last seen alive in the city’s red light district about 9pm on May 14. Her badly burned body was found at the scene of a scrub fire on the Main Rakaia Road the next day.
