Charge follows Lyttelton house fire
A psychiatric report has been ordered for a 28-year-old man charged with an arson that destroyed a Lyttelton house on Monday afternoon.
The fire, at a two-storey home in Bridle Path Road, sent flames shooting up to 12m in the air.
The house was occupied, but no-one was home at the time of the fire.
Bradley Gordon Schenkel, a builder, appeared before Judge Stephen O’Driscoll in the Christchurch District Court today, and was remanded in custody to June 16.
Defence counsel Stephen Hembrow said Schenkel had already been examined by a psychiatrist and he asked for the psychiatric report under the Criminal Procedures (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act to be prepared during the remand.
Police opposed Schenkel’s release on bail and Mr Hembrow said no application for bail was being made.
The house is owned by a person who shares Schenkel’s family name.
Judge O’Driscoll agreed to the remand and ordered the psychiatric report to be prepared while he is in custody.
