A teacher facing sex charges has surrendered his bail and consented to a remand in custody after admitting in court that some sexual activity did occur.
Name suppression was lifted on 54-year-old Michael William Hogan, who pleaded not guilty to nine sexual violation charges dating from 1990 to 1995.
But defence counsel Grant Tyrrell said police needed to amend or file alternative charges for the remaining six charges before pleas could be entered.
He said there were no grounds to continue the name suppression granted at Hogan’s first appearance in the Christchurch District Court in May.
Hogan admitted that some offending took place between these dates, and because of this admittance in a public court Hogan surrendered his bail and consented to a remand in custody, Mr Tyrrell said.
Judge Tony Couch remanded Hogan in custody to a Crown case review hearing on August 15.
