Machete involved in violent domestic incident
After threatening his partner with a machete, a 28-year-old man clubbed himself with the handle of the weapon and then stabbed himself in the chest with a small kitchen knife.
A psychological report has been ordered on Corey Jesse Waller ahead of his sentencing in the Christchurch District Court which has been set for August 25.
Judge Gary MacAskill, who remanded him in custody after his guilty pleas to three charges, also ordered a pre-sentence report on his suitability for home detention, a referral for a possible restorative justice meeting with the victim, and a report on emotional harm reparations.
At an appearance by video-link from the prison, where he has been held in custody on remand since April, Waller admitted charges of assault with intent to injure, unlawful possession of a machete, and threatening behaviour.
Police said the woman was at home with her two children aged 1 and 3 years, when Waller arrived home drunk and angry about 7.45pm on April 22.
The woman retreated to the bedroom with her daughters, but Waller followed her and grabbed her by the throat and squeezed. The woman was terrified and screamed at him to stop.
When she pushed his hand away he punched her in the face and when she sat up, shocked, he kicked her in the side of the face.
The woman leaned out an open window and screamed for help.
Waller left the room and the woman went into the lounge with her youngest daughter to look for her phone. As she sat on the couch, Waller came in holding a large machete.
He screamed at her to stop crying and to put her daughter down, and held the machete above his shoulder in a threatening manner. He continued to yell at her while he locked the door and pulled the curtains closed.
He stood over her and threatened to hit her with the machete if she did not put her daughter down.
When she refused, he clubbed himself in the head with the handle of the machete before falling to the floor. When he roused himself, he took a small knife from the kitchen and stabbed himself in the chest, causing shallow wounds.
The woman did not need medical treatment.
