Large scale thefts of stock alleged
Two people arrested for what police described as a highly organised North Canterbury stock rustling ring have been charged with 41 counts of theft totalling almost $150,000.
The pair aged 55 and 46, from the Hurunui District, did not appear before a judge but were remanded by a registrar to appear in the Christchurch District Court on April 22. (On that date, the man was granted interim name suppression by Judge Alistair Garland.)
The charges date from September 14, 2010 to October 14, 2013, and amount to $149,129. It is alleged that the pair committed theft by failing to account for stock they had received.
The woman had also been charged with assaulting a man on December 7, 2013.
In March the police said nearly 1000 head of stock had disappeared from sheep runs in the past three years, and they had been following the movement of more than 100,000 head of stock from a sheep run north of Parnassus.
The police alleged the operation to steal the sheep was carried out when there was a full moon so that lights and heading dogs were not required.
