Court House-general 3Electronically monitored bail has been refused for a man alleged to be a motorcycle gang member charged with possession of methamphetamine for supply after a police swoop in Woodend, North Canterbury, last month.

The application for bail for Andrew Michael Smith, 28, understood to be a member of the Rebels MC, was heard by Judge John Strettell in the Christchurch District Court today.

Police alleged after Smith’s arrest that he had been found with about 70g of methamphetamine, and a large amount of cash.

He has been in custody since his arrest, but applied for bail after his defence counsel Graeme Newell travelled from Auckland for today’s appearance.

Judge Strettell refused to grant bail and suppressed the details of the discussion and the reasons for his decision. He remanded Smith in custody without plea to August 25.
