A serving prisoner who has admitted biting part of the ears off two other inmates has now admitted stabbing another prisoner three times with an improvised knife.

It is understood that the knife blade had been fashioned out of a bucket handle at the prison.

William Alexander Hamish Grant, 19, pleaded guilty in the Christchurch District Court today to the charge of injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Judge Alistair Garland remanded him for sentence on March 18, at the request of defence counsel Elizabeth Bulger. He is already for sentence that day on charges of disfiguring two prisoners with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He had bitten off part of their ears in attacks at the Otago Correctional Facility in Milton, near Dunedin, and at Christchurch Men’s Prison.

Miss Bulger earlier told the court that the defence was getting a psychological report on Grant prepared ahead of the March sentencing.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Paul Scott said Grant and the victim were both inmates at Christchurch Men’s Prison.

About 3.25pm on October 25, Grant waited on a walkway, pacing back and forth for about five minutes.

The victim walked up and leaned over the side of the walkway to talk to someone below.

Grant approached him from behind, out of his line of sight, and attacked him with what the police described as “a metal improvised stabbing device”.

Grant stabbed him three times in the lower back. The victim defended himself and wrestled Grant to the ground until help arrived.

The victim received shallow strike wounds to the lower back. One was about 5cm long; another was a shallow puncture wound. He was attended by prison staff, but declined medical attention.

Grant is already serving a three-and-a-half year prison term for a 2012 assault on his ex-girlfriend, aged 15, in which he beat and choked her, tried to push her head under water in the bath, stomped on her head, and bit her nose.
