An arrest warrant has been issued for a man facing charges over his alleged role in two related police pursuits in Christchurch last month.
Christchurch District Court Judge Jane Farish issued the warrant for Brandon Alan Niven, 20, when he failed to appear after a remand on bail to today’s session.
Defence counsel Steve Hembrow said he could not oppose the police application for an arrest warrant.
Niven faces charges of unlawfully taking a $2500 Nissan Cefiro car, driving while forbidden, failing to stop for the police while driving dangerously, and reckless driving on Hills Road.
The Phillipstown man was arrested after allegedly ramming a police car and driving off at speed when the police tried to stop the vehicle. Police abandoned the chase in the city’s north because of the speed but later found the car in Springfield Road, St Albans, and made the arrest nearby.
The alleged driver of a second vehicle, which ended up crashed at the corner of Innes and Briggs Roads, is on remand to appear in court on Thursday.
Police said they had noticed one of the cars following along, while they were pursuing the other one, on the morning of August 24.
