Drugs ‘minder’ faces long jail term
A 46-year-old “minder” for a drug trafficker working between Auckland and Christchurch was sent to prison for over five years in the Christchurch District Court.
Arthur Mohi was sentenced on charges of conspiring to deal in methamphetamine, and possession for supply of the class A drug.
Mohi was one of four people involved in the drug trafficking and dealing, and the last to be dealt with by the court.
Defence counsel Serina Bailey said Mohi was remorseful, and being in prison had had a significant impact on his family.
She said the pre-sentence report said he was tempted by the money, but did not use methamphetamine himself.
Judge David Saunders said Tamal Edward McMeekan, 35, was the principal organiser, and he had been sentenced to seven years nine months prison. The two women involved were given home detention sentences.
He said Mohi was on bail when he was caught at Christchurch Airport in August 2014, after he had accompanied a woman to Auckland, made sure she picked up the methamphetamine, and returned to Christchurch.
He said Mohi had a lengthy history of offending, but had been busy doing courses while in prison.
Judge Saunders sentenced Mohi to five years nine months prison.
