Three-month delay for teen’s murder trial
A new trial date in November has been set for the two-week trial of a teenager charged with the murder of an elderly man at his Upper Riccarton home last August.
The trial of Taniela Kotoitoga Waitokia, now aged 17, was originally set to begin on August 22, but the new date of November 28 was set at a pre-trial conference session before Justice Cameron Mander in the High Court at Christchurch on Friday.
Waitokia denies the murder of 87-year-old Harold Richardson who was found dead at his home in Owens Terrace on the weekend of August 1-2, 2015.
The trial is expected to last two weeks. Jonathan Eaton QC appeared for Waitokia; Claire Boshier appeared for the Crown.
