Repeat upskirt video offending admitted

Northlands-09A man who has already done jail time for taking upskirt photographs in Northlands has now admitted committing the same offence four more times.

Maurice Hemi Williams, 32, was jailed for a year in 2011, but today pleaded guilty to a representative charge of making an intimate visual recordings using his cellphone from October to December 2015.

Again, the most recent video was made at Northlands shopping centre where Williams was spotted by a private security contractor on December 12.

Since his arrest the police have found videos on his cellphone of three other unknown women filmed in local supermarkets.

They amended the original charge today, to include all the other offending.

Williams placed his cellphone in a shopping basket facing vertically upwards and then swung the basket under the dresses of women.

The security contractor saw Williams manoeuvre the basket under the woman’s dress several times, and checking the recordings on his phone between these manoeuvres.

The woman was unaware that the recordings were being made.

Williams was jailed for a year in 2011 for similar upskirt photography and other charges. Williams told police he had been “egged on” by friends to take those pictures.

Christchurch District Court Judge Stephen O’Driscoll today remanded him in custody for sentencing on August 9 on this charge as well as breach of a protection order and a breach of a supervision sentence.

He remanded him for a pre-sentence report and for an update of the victim impact statement for the one victim who has been able to be identified.

Defence counsel Paul Norcross said that because Williams had already spent nine months in custody on remand since his arrest, no assessment of his suitability for home or community detention was required.
